School Cohort Intramural Tournament:
News from the Winning Cohort, Maroons:
Maroons Emerge Triumphant in the Inaugural
Year of BSCIT
By: John Law, '07
This being the inaugural year of the BSCIT competition,
we 1st-year Maroons weren't quite sure what to make of it. What was
this competition? Why were we having it? Would it be any fun? No
matter. It was there to be won, so why not win it? And after all,
what's more fun than winning?
Well, fun we had and win we did. Out of the nine events that were offered,
we took 1st place in six of them. Our margin of victory was so large that we
actually had it all wrapped up by the end of the Charity Event, which was the
8th competition. Our reward for winning was $1,000 added to our cohort funds
and our name engraved on a handsome trophy, the newly commissioned Feret-Guberer
Cup, which will commemorate the victorious cohort of this annual competition
in perpetuity. Our record-setting 182 point total I'm certain will stand for
years to come. OK, so it's not that hard to set the record when you're the first
to go, but we've set the bar pretty high. I predict it'll take years for future
cohorts to surpass it!
Yes, victory is sweet, but, to quote Vince Lombardi, winning is a habit. Most
Maroons I know are competitive and driven in everything that they do. I'm
particularly proud of my fellow Maroons not just because we won BSCIT, but because
we also immersed ourselves in the life and leadership of the broader Chicago Booth community.
There's always a Maroon involved somewhere, and that's really what it amounted
to: getting involved. At the Frosty Frolics event, we didn't win because we won
all the competitions at North Beach (which we almost did anyway). We won because
more Maroons showed up than any other cohort.
So, my hat's off to my fellow Maroons. And congratulations to our sister cohort
Phoenix , which took second place, and to all the other cohorts that participated
to make this first year of BSCIT a success. Finally, thanks go to the founding
fathers of these games, Anthony Feret and Steve Guberer for coming up with their
vision one "foggy" afternoon at Ida Noyes.
