About HABSA

OUR GOALS

The goals of the organization are as follows:

  • Support Hispanic Americans’ transition into the GSB and promote their involvement within the University of Chicago community.
  • Provide opportunities for member students to network with Hispanic business professionals, students of other MBA programs, and GSB alumni.
  • Assist member students with their career development and throughout the GSB recruitment process.

HABSA attempts to accomplish these goals through a series of events that include resume review workshops, informal breakfast and luncheons held with representatives of leading corporations from diverse industries, participation in the annual National Society of Hispanic MBAs conference, social outings, and alumni networking activities.

2007-2008 CO-CHAIRS


Lory Carbajal Van Ness was born in Mexico City. Both of her parents moved to the United States to pursue their doctorate degrees at Texas A&M University. After completing high school, Lory attended the University of Illinois where she majored in Business Administration. After graduation she began her career at Qwest Communications in Minneapolis as a business analyst and process manager in the National DSL division. Later she moved to Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati and became a program manager for the Retail division of the bank. While at the GSB, Lory plans on concentrating on Strategic Management and Finance. Lory will spend the summer in Chicago with Accenture.


Amparo Garcia was born and raised in Colorado and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Bachelor of Science in Operation Management, a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Magna Cum Laude and a minor in Ethnic Studies. Upon graduation, she kicked off her career at Accenture in the Telecommunications practice. Amparo has served on several boards including National Society of Hispanic MBAs in Denver, the University of Colorado Alumni Association and is current principle with Denver City Forum, of which she is a co-founder.

Her emphases at The University of Chicago GSB include Finance, Economics and Strategic Management. Prior to entering the MBA program, Amparo enjoyed the challenges of her role in the Risk and Advisory Services practice with KPMG, a leading provider of audit, tax and advisory services. Prior to KPMG, Amparo worked with the Latin American Educational Foundation as the Director of the Technology Center, where she provided fundamental computer training at no cost to members of the community. She seeks the opportunity to foster excellence in her personal and professional surroundings. Amparo has 13 siblings, to which she attributes her team-oriented character. She currently sings in a choir and enjoys the outdoors.


Edgar Gonzalez was born in Chicago, Illinois to parents who immigrated to the United States from Mexico. Edgar completed his undergraduate degree at Princeton University in 2002, where he majored in Politics, earning certificates in Political Economy and Latin American Studies. After graduation, Edgar joined Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York as an Analyst in their Real Estate Investment Banking Group. In this capacity, Edgar worked in a wide array of transactions ranging from Initial Public Offerings to Mergers and Acquisitions. In 2004, he joined Wells Fargo Securities in their Chicago office, where he focused on middle market investment banking and was promoted to Associate in 2005. At the GSB, Edgar plans on concentrating in Accounting, Finance and Strategic Management and will spend his summer in New York with Goldman Sachs.


Edison A. Ordonez was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador and raised in White Plains, NY. He is one of four children born to parents who immigrated to the United States from Ecuador. Edison completed his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester in 1999. After graduating he began his career as a process engineer. In his seven year career as process engineer he was instrumental in the successful commercialization of several products for both Unilever and PepsiCo. Now at the GSB, Edison plans on concentrating Finance and General Management. He will be at UBS as a sales and trading summer associate on the Fixed Income desk for the summer of 2007.


Rebeca Sanchez Sarmiento was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. Both her parents immigrated to the United States - her father was born in Argentina while her mother is originally from Bolivia. After completing high school, Rebeca attended New York University’s Stern School of Business where she majored in Economics and International Business. Following graduation, she accepted a position at Smith Barney working with a retail portfolio management team. Later she transferred to Citigroup where she spent the last three years covering Latin America and EMEA equity strategy in Citigroup’s Equity Research Department. While at the GSB, Rebeca plans on concentrating in Finance, Accounting and Strategic Management and will continue working in investment management.
