What do investment banks do? Investment Banks help companies raise capital (money) and advise on financing and merger alternatives. In other words, and more simply, investment banks match parties that need money with parties that have money. In practice, this can take many forms, including Initial Public Offerings, M&A, Syndicated Loans, Derivatives Trading, etc. The IBG Handbook includes more details about everything you want to know about investment banks (restricted access). What opportunities are available for MBA students? There are a variety of opportunities available at investment banks, much more than the corporate finance side of the business that most incoming students are familiar with. Most of the major Investment Banks have four primary areas: Corporate Finance, Sales & Trading, Research, and Private Wealth Management. Banks recruit at the GSB for summer and full-time associate positions in each of these areas.
